Looking for Web Hosting That Doesn’t Suck

Let’s see… from at least 9 AM to 8:30 PM today, both my Web sites, all my domain names, and all my e-mail accounts were completely offline. I was unable to find out a reason why, and e-mails to tech support went unanswered. So that’s almost 12 complete hours of downtime without even so much as an “oops”. When I shell into the box where my stuff lives, the only explanation given is “8/18: Massive screwup with startup scripts. Hosting services unavailable for a few hours.”

Thanks, csoft.net!

Seriously, that’s unacceptable. 12 hours downtime is not a minor “oops” issue, it’s a major fuck-up. This is the second time in three months that they’ve knocked me offline for 4+ hours without an explanation, too. If I was running an online business through csoft and they just shrugged their shoulders at that I’d be tempted to burn their office down.

If anyone can recommend a good virtual hosting service that supports the following:

  • Multiple domains (preferably unlimited)
  • Multiple MySQL databases
  • IMAP mail access
  • Perl
  • PHP
  • mod_rewrite

… for a reasonable price, drop me a line, I’m very interested.

Talk to Oscar–we are on a shared Linux box. We used to have Jo administering it, but occasionally we ask a favor of him. It’s at Rackshack, who have been pretty good. Since Jo left we’d be happy for someone to take up part of the payments :). It has Java, MySQL, PHP, Perl, etc. etc.

As for me, I’m happy with Citizen Hosting. They have demonstrated excellent service during my time with them. They offer high bandwidth, up to date software support and lots of features for a reasonable cost. Also, the stuff is friendly so I can honestly say I’m quite satisfied with them.

Good luck dude. I’ve been through more hosts than I can count. It’s amazing how complicated it is to do something as simple as web hosting. I won’t list the ones I’ve been on and am currently on that suck, but the list isn’t short.
What amazes me is the fact that not ONLY do they suck technically, but they ALL have the worst customer service. Why is their underpaid underqualified work at home in Russia tech always such an ass? Must be a “union thing”.
(BTW, I’ve managed a web hosting company before–they suck too, so I don’t use them–and it IS possible to have good customer service. Anyone who’s a jerk about their “minor 24-hour downtime” is simply an ass.)
